Eric Gill: Designer for Industry

The Story of a famous designer

This piece was selected to appear in the Communication Arts 2016 Typography Annual.

This motion piece celebrates the life and work of English designer Eric Gill. An equally talented and interesting figure, Gill was a rich subject. In my initial research, I was struck by the range of his work, from detailed illustrations and sculptures to modern typography. As a craftsman living in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, his reaction to industrialism also captivated me. His struggle to balance artistry and industry serves as the main theme of this video. Combining his diverse work with John Adams's dynamic music, I navigate the distinct phases of Gill's career.
